I was thrilled that the local Brooklyn Academy of Music invited me to collaborate with them on a series of portraits of the creative cast of “Crossing”, Matthew Aucoin’s recent opera based on Walt Whitman’s Civil War journals, which they produced in October, 2017. It was an enormous honor to work not only with the fantastic team at BAM, but also to collaborate with Aucoin, an extraordinary and extraordinarily young composer frequently billed as the next Leonard Bernstein, as well as the whole creative team of the production. I particularly love the portraits of cast members Davóne Tines and Frank Kelley — I think they are some of the best portraits I’ve been able to take with my pinhole camera.
My photos were published on BAM’s blog, alongside the artists’ responses to Whitman’s question “What is it then between us?”, to help promote the opera.
